Carpenter arrives

On an immediate tactical level the Jacobites appeared at first sight to have done well. They had after all handsomely beaten off all of the attacks launched against them. On deeper reflection, their situation was much less favourable. While they had largely succeeded in holding their positions, that was not the same thing as defeating their attackers. Wills had very effectively pinned them down; he was still surrounding them and obviously had no intention of leaving. For their part, the Jacobites had neither the food nor the ammunition to withstand a blockade, particularly when there were no friendly forces outside to lift that blockade. Realistically there were already no more than two stark and unpalatable choices open to the Jacobites. They could attempt to break out or they could open negotiations for surrender.

The first option was apparently canvassed by Forster during the afternoon of 12 November, when he proposed to Borlum that his Highlanders should launch a counterattack, sallying out sword in hand. Borlum however flatly refused, no doubt rightly suspecting that the horse would then take the opportunity to escape, leaving the Scots in the lurch – a topic that he revisited in captivity:
